GUBBIO – Today, 19th July 2016, is the 24th anniversary of the death of Paolo Borsellino, killed with five bodyguards by the mafia in the famous massacre of via d’Amelio.

The movement “Agende rosse-Gruppo Peppino Impastato Gubbio” has organised an event, in piazza Oderisi, in memory of Paolo Borsellino in which also the Mayor Filippo Stirati and the Councillor Gabriele Damiani have participated. The Mayor highlighted that it is important to respect the memory of those who have fought against mafia, who have defended our country, its laws and its rules.

I strongly believe that we have to think about young people, their hopes and projects. We have to think about a country in which transparency, honesty and legality are our funding values”, affirmed the Mayor Stirati, who also mentioned Martin Luther King in his speech.

The Mayor and the Councillor have participated actively to this event, reading some famous quotes of the victims of the mafia, for example Paolo Borsellino, Giovanni Falcone and Peppino Impastato, or some important characters who fight against mafia, such as Nino Di Matteo and Antonio Ingroia.

In fact the main initiative was that some citizens of Gubbio, above all young people, have read some famous thoughts regarding Paolo Borsellino and the fight against mafia. “The mafia fears most the culture rather than the justice”, this quote of Don Luigi Ciotti is one of the most significant quotes that the citizens have read in this event.

During this event, it has been broadcasted in live streaming the commemoration taken place in Palermo in memory of this important figure in the fight against mafia. At the end of the commemoration, all the participants got together in the centre of Piazza Oderisi and have observed a touching minute’s silence in his memory.
